Dentures/Partials

Dentures are the most common oral appliance used to replace missing teeth. Dentures are custom-fit to each patient and are removable for cleaning and sleeping. The type of denture needed will depend on how many teeth are missing. Replacing an entire row of teeth will require a full denture, whether for the top or bottom, or you may need both. If only filling gaps, a partial denture is needed.

As a removable appliance, minor adjustments will be needed to prevent rubbing and irritation of the soft tissues in the mouth. The initial adjustments will be done when first presented to the patient. At any time after that visit, the patient should return to the office for more adjustment at the first sign of discomfort. Dentures should not hurt.

Partial dentures are made on a wire and plastic frame, attaching replacement teeth to fill the gaps in the gums. It then clips inside the mouth with the wire attaching to the remaining teeth. Full dentures are molded to fit the gums.

Cleaning is simple and done daily. Each night, the dentures are removed and gently brushed, then placed in water until morning. Effervescent tablets are often used to help clear plaque and bacteria. During sleep, the mouth is allowed to rest and perform its natural cleaning process.
