Fixed Bridges

The term bridge is sometimes used to describe a partial denture which is a removable oral appliance that replaces missing teeth. More often, a bridge is a fixed oral appliance used to replace teeth, meaning that it remains in the mouth permanently. A fixed bridge is a common form of tooth restoration available at Dr. Tom B. Curtis’s office. A bridge is a custom-made frame with replacement teeth made of porcelain. The type of bridge configuration describes how the bridge is attached inside the mouth.

A traditional bridge is attached to the backs of two crowns that have been placed over the abutting teeth (the teeth on either side of the gap). The abutting teeth are prepared, and the crowns are cemented over them.

A Maryland bridge is bonded directly onto the backs of the abutting teeth without placing crowns.

A Cantilever bridge is bonded to one abutting tooth with a cemented crown.

An implant-supported bridge is bonded to two crowns, but those crowns are on top of implants. These bridges take a longer time to apply to allow for the healing of the implant procedures.
