Nightguard
Bruxism is a condition that you may not even know you have. Some patients are very surprised to learn that their teeth are wearing down and that they are likely the cause of the worn teeth. Maybe you are aware that you grind your teeth. You just may not know that it is a “condition” that can cause unwanted consequences.
Bruxism is the grinding and clenching of the teeth. It can be an unconscious movement and happen when awake or asleep. Sleep bruxism is also referred to as a sleep-related disorder and is commonly associated with snoring and sleep apnea. Dr. Tom B. Curtis in West Linn, Oregon, can help with the dental complications that develop with severe bruxism.
Jaw muscles are the strongest force in the entire body. The extreme force of grinding can cause extreme problems with the teeth, face, and head. Sleep bruxism is sometimes diagnosed when patients present with tight and tired jaws, worn-down teeth, increased tooth sensitivity, and/or morning headaches.
Sleep bruxism is easily treated with a custom guard to cushion the jaw and protect the teeth while asleep by creating a soft barrier. These are called nightguards or night splints.
In severe cases of awake bruxism, a mouthguard or dental guard for daywear is sometimes needed.
