Teeth Cleaning
Brushing, flossing, and using an antibacterial mouthwash at least twice a day is the recommended oral care routine for all adults and children. While this is the most important component of a healthy routine, professional cleanings every six months are also recommended. No amount of brushing will remove 100% of plaque from teeth. Professional cleaning is needed to remove the extra buildup and keep an eye on overall oral health.
Plaque allows bacteria to grow and both will allow the tooth enamel to decay. If allowed to progress, decay will progress deeper into the tooth, tissues, and bones and lead to infection and possible tooth loss.
The six-month cleanings are performed by a certified hygienist. First, a scaler is used to remove the remaining plaque. While this portion of the cleaning is usually the least popular, it is relatively painless. Diligent brushing will keep this portion to a minimum. Special gritty toothpaste is then used to scrub the teeth. You get to choose a yummy flavor! Lastly, a good floss and a final rinse.
Dr. Curtis will then come in to do a thorough examination to look for potential problems. When finished, the patient receives a small goody bag with a new toothbrush, toothpaste, and some floss.
