TMJD

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) is the long version of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) or TMD (temporomandibular disorder). All of these mean the same thing -- dysfunction of the jaw. The dysfunction can be purely mechanical or can cause mild to severe pain. The jaw can be stuck open or shut. The jaw can pop when it moves. There can be a tired feeling in the face or swelling in the cheek or jaw areas. All of these are problems with the TMJ or the hinge that allows your mouth to move, chew, talk, and yawn.

TMJD happens more commonly in women from the ages of 20 to 40 but can happen at any age to anyone. The pain can be on one side of the face or the other, or both.

Clenching of the teeth, stress, and arthritis are common causes of TMJD.
