Tooth Extractions

No one wants to have a tooth pulled (tooth extraction), but sometimes, it is unavoidable.  In the event of severe infection or trauma, tooth extraction may be the only option.  Fortunately, modern dentistry has made the procedure simple and practically painless. 

In the “old days,” dentistry mainly consisted of scary and painful instruments used only when a patient had no other options for tooth pain.   Good oral hygiene was not a major consideration, and preventative medicine was scarce.  These days, good anesthetic is available.  The patient is generally back to a normal routine by the next day. 

Tooth extraction is a simple procedure and knowing what is going to happen ahead of time can make it less scary. 

The area around the damaged tooth is numbed with a small injection after a bit of numbing gel is applied to the spot where the needle will be inserted.  A small pinching sensation should be the only feeling.  The anesthesia is given some time to take full effect before beginning. 

Dr. Curtis will gently rock the tooth back and forth to release the root from the socket.  Hopefully, the tooth will slide out all in one piece, although it may need to be removed in pieces.  It is as simple as that.  The nurse will give the patient after-care instructions and probably be encouraged to rest at home for the remainder of the day.
